Independent Services > Toxoplasmosis Laboratory

Description

The Toxoplasmosis Laboratory works as a referral centre for the study of the disease, the care of pregnant women - as it is a frequent cause of eye lesion in children - and that of transplanted or immunocompromised individuals. A multidisciplinary team of specialists cares for patients and provides advise to physicians so requesting it.

Specific studies are performed to diagnose toxoplasmosis: Sabin Feldman test, complement fixation with light antigen, immunofluorescence anti IgG and IgM, ISAgA anti IgM, IgA and IgE tests, Frenkel’s cutireaction with toxoplasmin and parasite isolation and identification. In special cases, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in amniotic fluid or blood from the umbilical cord is performed.

There is also a bioterium, where parasites from suspicious material are isolated by inoculation to mice free from natural infection.
